St Chad Haggerston is open

Father James Westcott retired on 31 January 2024. We are currently collecting to fund a memorial to his 28 years of service to this church.

When a church is between priests, it is said to be in the interregnum. The Parochial Church Council of St Chad Haggerston regularly meets and has developed a Mission Plan to continue to grow our church. Please join us; we are a diverse and welcoming community. The best way to join us is to attend Mass: St Chad’s is a beautiful church, and our services are spiritual and special.

The church is still very much open. Please do visit and join our worship.

Sunday Mass is at 11am. As we await a new vicar, we welcome priests from the See of Fulham to celebrate, and thank Jonathan, Bishop of Fulham for his oversight.

Father Aidan, Priest in Charge at Holy Trinity Hoxton celebrates Mass with us every Wednesday at 10.30am. If you would like to join us, phone or email our churchwardens to confirm.

Sunday 21st January 2024

Sung Parish Mass 11.00am

(The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Yr. B)

Thank you for staying back last Sunday after Mass. It was good to hear everyone’s comments and questions to the Churchwardens. This follows their meeting with Bishop Jonathan. I think we were all gratified to hear Malcome and Matthew’s words of warmth & encouragement from The Bishop of Fulham.

Now is the time, as was said last week, for people to pull together; especially over the next few months. People will need encouraging here. St Chad’s has a great opportunity to welcome others and be renewed in its own mission.

People know what to. They have the gifts to do what is needed. It is a work that will be amply rewarded here and now. We have Christ’s spirit with us even more than ever at this time of renewal. Each and everyone have always been valued here, now each one can share the gift they themselves were given. I know you will try your very best.

WELCOME TO OUR MASS TODAY.  This is our Second Sunday Mass of 2024. It is good to note that some familiar words we say each Sunday and Week-day at the Eucharist are taken directly from the Gospel. Today is one example: Look, this is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World.   Or another is the Roman Soldier whose servant was sick: Lord, I am not worthy that you should come to my home (under my roof), but sonly say the word, and my servant may be healed. When we can’t get to Mass sometimes, we might use some of the words for ourselves, and for the world so in need of good kinder words; and of the Saviour, Jesus of Nazareth. My Lord and my God.

Sunday 7th January 2024       The Epiphany of The Lord

Sung Parish Mass 11.00am

We are grateful to all who, throughout the year past, have given their time and talent to keep this church a warm and welcome place for us all.  I know you were all again encouraged by our Bishop’s own words to me few days before Christmas. He too wishes and intends to see this church to continue to flourish with the parishes of The See of Fulham. Please make time every Sunday for Mass and Holy Communion here. We have to accept some hardships and the cross for our faith. Our journey of faith in the world was never going to be an easy one. The church is here in people as Christ’s Sacrament in the community and the world.

We pray today for those who struggle at Christmas, especially in our own parish. This church on the corner of Dunloe Street and Appleby Street must remain a sign of God’s welcome to all who call upon us. The light over The blessed Sacrament reminds us of this.

Thank you to all who helped in any way to make the Christmas Festival at Mass a good one. Welcome to our Mass of The Epiphany today. This day is kept as a special re-telling of the visit of the Wise Men from the East. Most of us now see the scene of Bethlehem through the lens of a journalist’s camera. Above in the sky we see missiles and drones; no room for a Star in a universe blighted by war.

Yet we are still called to follow that Star, not to a lovely looking church crib and nice singing and smiles; but to accompany people in places of darkness, insecurity and danger. Precisely what the visitors from the East found. So much so that the gospel records them having to make their return more like an escape. The grips of evil were around them then, as it is today in a world chasing the stars of war.

Sunday 31st December 2023

The Seventh Day of Christmas dedicated to The Holy Family

Sung Mass 11.00am

Thank you to all who helped in any way to make the Christmas Festival at Mass a good one.

We are grateful to all who throughout the year have given their time and talent to keep this church a warm and welcome place for us all. It is by being present, (a good word for Christmas) that we will continue to make it so. I was much encouraged by our Bishop’s own words to me few days before Christmas. He too wishes and intends to see this church flourish with the parishes of The See of Fulham. Please make time and put our usual devoted love for every Sunday Mass and Holy Communion here.

We pray today for those who struggle at Christmas, especially in our own parish.

We are grateful that today and throughout 2023 that the Fellows Court Community Centre has been able to open.

This is due to volunteers who assist at Idia’s Community Kitchen who occupy the Fellows Crt. centre. The pracrical help and donations from St Chad’s has been particularly noticed this year; especially when we have so much going on in our own corner of the parish.

To paraphrase some words of Bishop Weston on our Website Home page: We have our Mass, our Sacraments and our Tabernacles, our Priests and Parties. Let us not forget those who may need the comfort of friendship and welcome of our church here. Go out to them too. And meet them as Christ.

A Happy New Year from the Vicar

PLEASE THE POSTER FOR THE ADVENT TO CHRISTMAS SERVICES

WELCOME to our Sunday Mass today for the Third Sunday of Advent (The opening Antiphon says rejoice it is called Gaudete Sunday). There may seem little to ‘rejoice’ at in the news. Perhaps we can recall today Jesus’ reading in the Synagogue at Capernaum. ‘To bind up hearts that are broken’. Our First reading. We recall Jesus’s land was occupied and there was such corruption and slaughter too. Yet they found a space to hold onto some ‘joy’. Let us not be blind, or deaf, or lame to the cries for justice and peace in the world and the Middle East especially. As we take time today to recall there was and can be joy in the world.

Later today at 4.00pm there is an Advent Service of Carols proposed at the last PCC.  We have Benediction too. It follows the same lines as last year. I have booked special entertainment From the Variety Collective. There is a Buffet Table and drinks. Please do return today at 4pm and bring those at home with you!

There are Services and Mass Daily. Please see notice board.

SUNG PARISH MASS of ADVENT 11.00AM

WELCOME to our Sunday Mass today for the Second Sunday of Advent. Thank you to all who helped in any way Last Sunday for the Mass. Every little helps our community to worship and pray together. And isn’t there so much to pray for? The end of the Second Reading says in regards to waiting on the Lord: While you are waiting do your best…..that He will find you at peace (2 Peter 3 .14).

Next Sunday (17th December 2023) there is an Advent Service of Carols proposed at the last PCC. Unfortunately, I was not able to be at the meeting; and I was asked to organise this.  We can have Benediction too. It follows the same lines as last year. I have also tried to book some entertainment for the parish, but so far, no one has been able to provide this. (Things may alter by Sunday)!

Thank you to the donor of the Christmas tree in the Hall and for decorating it. What a surprise gift! And takes some of the burden off at this time of the year.

The First Sunday of Advent Yr. B

Psalter/Daily Office Book Wk. 1

Sung Mass 11.00am

Welcome to our Sunday Mass today for the First Sunday of Advent. The clear call of the Gospel is to be vigilant and awake. Some people in our world have no choice but to remain alert. Alert to the possibility of Western weapons falling into their places of rest or refuge. Some have to stay awake because of the fears of some terrestrial disaster befalling their homes; maybe directly due to the vast changes in climate. We may have the privilege of choice in this matter and are called to use that choice freely. Let always remember those whose silent call is for others to wake up this Advent 2023. We begin the Gospel of Mark today. More about ‘Mark’ during the Mass.

Thank you to those who stayed back for the PCC last week. Your time was much appreciated.
